Watch it! Or I’ll snap ya!

Education, Lefties

13 year old Robert Gomez is being suspended from school for 10 days for ‘assault with a rubber band’.

According to Gomez, he slipped a rubber band on his wrist, then when his science teacher demanded that he take it off, he lobbed it onto her desk. Now he’s being suspended for 10 days for ‘assaulting an educator with a weapon’.

His case is now under review and if the ‘threat level’ of this rubber band was high enough, he could face expulsion from the district.

Ok people, we live in a pretty crazy world, but even the teachers description of what happened doesn’t sound like he pulled it back and shot her with it. If I had done something like that when I was in 7th grade, they would have PROBABLY given me lunch detention for 2 days. I would love to talk to this teacher and find out how terrified she was of a 13 yr. old armed with a loop of elastic rubber. Sounds absolutly terrifying, I don’t think I could sleep for weeks.

Come ON! I got a week of lunch with the principal in 5th grade for setting off a firework at a teacher, and you’re telling me now it’s a “Level 4″ offense to be armed with a rubber band. That’s it, I’m home schooling my kids!

On the surface this of course looks absurd, but it might not be so cut and dry.

Having taught in the inner city for a number of years, I can think of several reasons for this.

My biggest question is what type of student is Mr. Gomez. What does his file look like?

I’ve had several students that I activly looked for a reason to get them into an alternative situation.

Say what you will about today’s public schools, but the BIGGEST problem with them is the lack of parental involvement. Teachers have been forced to take on so many added responsibilities that teaching has become secondary. The current push for standardization will not help matters…

    I could go on and on… but I won’t…
