At first glance into the case surrounding Terri and her families fight for her life, I felt for them, and really wished they could find a way for her to live. As time went on and I thought about it more, it’s time for them to accept that she is beyond recovery and them forcing her to remain ‘alive’ is cruel and unusual.
Imagine yourself in Terri’s shoes. In the heat of the moment during a heart wrenching news story, you tell your spouse you want them to pull the plug if you befall the same fate, yet you don’t ‘write it down’. Suddenly, weeks/months/years later you are the victim of a tragic accident, and your spouse tries to pull the plug and your family (who has no clue of your wish to die) steps in to keep you ‘alive’ because they can’t stand to see you go. Imagine and think for a moment and MAYBE you can see a glimpse into the other side of the story.
She has been described to us by the people on the ‘life’ side of the discussion as being in a coma, but if you ask a medical professional, she is in what they call a persistent vegetative state. No one has ever recovered from being in a persistent vegetative state. It is not a ‘brain damage’ as would be in a coma, instead persistent vegetative state is classified under ‘brain death’. She is only being kept alive to make a point, and that, is wrong.
Her husband MAY have ulterior motives but I personally have no way to prove these. He may also be a complete scum bag for fathering 2 children by another woman while his real wife lay in a vegetative state, but who am I to judge, his time will come.
By keeping her alive in her PERMANANT state you are committing her to a sentence FAR WORSE than death… she is being imprisoned in her own body, unable to reach the outside world. Let her out.
How many of you can honestly say that you would like to be kept alive, for 20, 40, 50 years or more like this? If you wouldn’t want this for yourself, why do so many of you work so hard to force this reality on Terri Schiavo? Oh .. I forgot. You’re pro-life.
…
Recently, Sean Hannity had a doctor hired by Terri’s Parents on his show to discuss Terri’s condition. Dr. Hammensfahr says that Terri Schiavo could possibly walk again.
In court Hammensfahr testified that he felt that he was able to get Terri Schiavo to repeatedly respond to his command. When the judge was present Hammensfahr gave 105 commands to Schiavo. Then her Father, Bob Schindler gave another 6 commands.
Hammensfahr asked Terri 72 questions. The judge observed the entire procedure and said that he “saw few actions that could be considered responsive to either those commands or those questions.” Over 180 questions and commands, and all they could find were “a few actions” that COULD be construed as a response.
A second doctor, Dr. Maxfield, testified that a patient in a persistent vegetative state will, from time to time, track a moving object with their eyes and that smiling can be nothing more than a automatic reflex to some sort of stimulus. Newborn babies will smile for no known reason, doesn’t mean they comprehend the action.
