A tragic thing happened this weekend in Oklahoma City, a police officer was killed in a high speed chase, but what is more tragic than that, is what they plan to do about it.
Currently in a few states, due to the same sort of accidents, we have police officials enacting a policy change towards a “No Chase” policy. With this “progressive” policy, they will not pursue anyone that flees at a high rate of speed, unless they are wanted for a violent felony. These policies are nothing but knee-jerk reactions to accidents and nothing more. The “No Chase” policy is a recipe for chaos and it’s catching on like the bird flu.
First, how do you know that this person you have just pulled over for speeding, did not kill his entire family 20 min earlier? He may have no record since he JUST committed his first violent felony. He thinks you’re on to him for killing them, not for speeding, so he speeds off. You think this was a routine traffic stop so, due to the state-wide ban on high speed chases, you merely log his tag number, and go on your merry little way.
How does this solve anything? It is already possible to call off chases for a multitude of reasons, be it, the location, the number of cars involved, the experience of the pursuing officer… all of those can be considered and the chase can be called off by the police chief at ANY TIME. So why give a green light to these morons that run in the first place?
If you outlaw the chase, the outlaws will run. It’s that simple.
