On Tuesday, the Senate Commerce Committee will begin hearings on a set of government regulations (ugh) on digital media. The regulations are looked at in the form of ‘flags’ set by the media industry… broadcast flags, and audio flags.
If this law comes into play the government and the entertainment industry could be able to control what you do with the digital media in your home. In the case of broadcast flags… they gain control of your right to copy, back-up, or convert broadcast media into formats more convenient to you (i.e. TV > iPod), basically turning “fair use” on it’s head. The most dubious of all, the audio flag has the potential to allow the FCC into the gold mine… Satellite radio.
If you live in one of the following states PLEASE call, Fax, or email your Senator as they are on the Senate Commerce Committee, and let them know that this bill is complete hogwash and needs to be put to an early rest as soon as possible.
Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oregon, South, Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, or West Virginia
While you’re at it, ask their support for HR 1201 that would allow MORE freedom to do with your media, as YOU wish (i.e. moving the contents of a CD to an MP3 player etc.).
