Suspicions about gas prices?

Ok, I normally have a very little faith in the intelligence of the average American but this news story today in the Indy Star just knocked that faith through the floor.

Retired farmer Jim Mohr, from Lexington, IL ran down a list of “reasons” for the drop in gas prices. His list included some of the more logical ideas like the end of the summer travel season and the lack of gulf hurricane activity this year, but then his logic ends and he uttered this:

“But I think the big important reason is Republicans want to get elected. They think getting the prices down is going to help get some more incumbents re-elected.”

The sad thing is, he’s not alone… according to a recent Gallup poll, 42% of respondents agreed with the statement that the Bush administration “deliberately manipulated the price of gasoline so that it would decrease before this fall’s elections.”. Sadly their motive behind the poll is exposed by the revelation that 2/3 of those who agreed, are registered Democrats.

There’s that wonderful government education at work… never mind the laws of supply and demand, NOPE! Our EVIL President has his hand on a button to manipulate market prices and screw us over.

I think Tony Snow said it best in response to this poll;

“The one thing I have been amused by is the attempt by some people to say that the president has been rigging gas prices, which would give him the kind of magisterial clout unknown to any other human being.”

  • The flip side however, is that you don’t have to look hard to find Republicans who take credit for the falling gas prices.

  • That’s politicians for you… they take advantage of the stupid for personal gain.

    Much like the Democrats are doing right now with the declassified documents on Iraq that Bush had released… chock full of if, and’s and but’s with very few concrete statements, yet they’re holding it up as if it were the Bible.

  • This is ridiculous. First off even if the Republican party or any party could control the price of oil why in the name of God would they want it to be high that only detracts from them. Idiotic, thats who these people are they are also the same people that say the only reason we are in Iraq is for oil. Which of course completly disregards history and market economics. Saddamn Hussein the terrible man that he is, was quite frankley one of the best damned friends the American Oil Consumer ever had because he pumped out more oil than Iraq is now due to rebuilding and he did so undercutting OPEC every single damned time he sold oil at a lower price than OPEC dictated. Retards all of them.
