Gas and stupidity

Conspiracies, Education

Coming to work yesterday morning I noticed that the price of a gallon of unleaded gas has fallen to $1.96. I’m pretty pumped… it won’t even take $30 to fill my tank up anymore.

I happened to be listening to the local talk radio station and they were discussing the radical drop in prices this week and had interviewed a handful of folks on the street to see what we thought about the new low in gas prices. The results, not positive.

Of those they aired, I would say ONE person was glad that our gas was below $2 a gallon… the rest? “It’s a plot by the Bush Administration to make us re-elect them in November!”, “Bush is pushing the price down to improve his numbers!”, Bush, Bush, Bush, Bush.

Are we REALLY that stupid? Do we honestly think that The President of the US has a “Gas Price Machine” that he sets every morning? Are we completely oblivious to the fact that EVERY YEAR the price of gas goes up during the Summer and drops in the Fall? The price of gas is controlled by Supply and Demand, and there is VERY little that George Bush can do to manipulate the price of gas.

I guess it just goes to show how well we educate our citizens in this country.

I don’t think anyone supposes that there is a Presidential Gas Price Machine, as noted, but perhaps the opinion runs more along the lines that the combined power of the administration, sensing general unrest, is doing whatever it can to manipulated the ticked-off crowds into complacency.

I don’t endorse or deny, but I think your simplification of the stance does make it seem overly ridiculous. More so than deserved.

I don’t see how anyone that could have a working knowledge of our ecomony could suspend their knowledge to accept a conspiracy that just doesn’t add up.

The President has very little to no control over the price of goods and services in this country, PERIOD.

You have to be either completely blind to the facts or ignorant of how our country works to think the President can fluctuate prices to fit his whims.

If that were the case, why would he hike it to over $3 a gallon in the first place. If lower gas prices meant happier citizens you bet your butt I’d keep gas prices around $1.50 a gallon year round if I were President.

Actually, it’s a credibility issue. Bush hasn’t been totally honest over a number of issues and people don’t forget when it occurs all too frequently. Also, his letting the petroleum industry execs write his energy policy and then wouldn’t disclose the full facts concerning those meetings didn’t make his appear totally forthright.
He and Cheney fabricated this situation and they shouldn’t be all that surprised at the results. Unless, that is, they underestimated the intelligence and memory of the citizenry. If that’s the case, it was another serious blunder.
