Why I Think Imus Should Not Be Suspended OR Fired

I’ve never listened to one single minute of any of Don Imus’ programming. In fact, I didn’t even know who Don Imus was until I heard his inappropriate comment about the Rutgers Women’s Basketball team. All that on the table, I do not support the calls by the media to fire Imus, nor do I support the decision to suspend his program for two weeks.

Why? Three Words…

First Amendment Rights

Imus said some extremely stupid things on the air and that simply cannot be changed or taken back. That being said, should Imus not be allowed to have a voice simply because he said something that was distasteful? What right do you or anyone else have to decide what someone else can say, or who can listen to what is said?

Imus owes his job to the free market… as does anyone in the media. If the country did not want to hear from them, they would change the station/channel and move on. Demand for their opinions would dry up and there would be no need to employ them any longer. America prides itself on its freedoms, yet the American people seem willing, at the drop of a hat to backseat those freedoms when something “offensive” surfaces. Tough crap folks, if there is room in our country for people with opinions you want to hear, there is room in this country for oppinions that put you off.

I have no problem with groups and individuals jumping on a person to express their distaste for their opinions, but I despise those who drive to silence anyones freedom of speech based on their differences in opinions (are you listening Roker, Sharpton and Jackson?).

Censorship is for the week. If you don’t like what someone has to say, head the other way… but you have ZERO right to remove someone elses freedoms simply because you disagree.
