Digg users are an immature lot.
I’ve never understood Digg… and frankly I’ve come to the realization that most users on Digg.com are immature and wholly ignorant of reality.
Digg was served a take down notice following the posting of the code needed to decrypt the new HD-DVD format. Obviously such information directly violates the owners of the HD-DVD formats rights to their intellectual property and as such posting of such information would be in direct violation of the laws regarding IP.
Digg posted the following on their blog yesterday:
Whether you agree or disagree with the policies of the intellectual property holders and consortiums, in order for Digg to survive, it must abide by the law. Digg’s Terms of Use, and the terms of use of most popular sites, are required by law to include policies against the infringement of intellectual property. This helps protect Digg from claims of infringement and being shut down due to the posting of infringing material by others.
Apparently the laws are of little concern to the userbase at Digg as a nerd riot ensued consisting of massive amounts of submissions and diggs for posts containing the encryption key. So much so that the staff at Digg went on the offense trying to block and suspend accounts posting the code. Basically, the nerd riot got so out of hand that the staff aty Digg had two options, shut down the site or bow down to the masses.
Well it appears that despite very clear laws regarding the legality of access to this information, Digg folded and handed control of their site to the userbase.
after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.
If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.
Despite the lack of interest I originally had in Digg… I have even less now.

I totally agree to what you have said, digg users don’t care much about digg but more of the ability to share the information and prove how stupid they are..
I think it got out of hand when they wanted to prove that digg staff do moderate the content on digg.com. It’s just ignorance from the user and now digg has to face the consequence. I really love digg and don’t want digg to go away because of some very immature users.
