Oklahoma State Senator calls HB1804’s author a racist

Yesterday, Sen. Harry Coates made a statement about House Bill 1804 that is LAW in Oklahoma as of Nov 01 of this year. The bill blocks employment, housing, and government “tax payer funded” benefits to ANYONE in the US illegally (Emergency Care is still available).

In his statement, Coates said, “When you say that mothers who have dark skin should not be able to receive prenatal care, I find that racist.”

YES, Harry that WOULD be racist, but nowhere… NOWHERE in HB1804 does it comment on color, race, ethnicity or anything that could be racist in nature. NOTHING. Not ONCE has Randy Terrell said anything even remotely close to what you stated there so you’re WAY off base.

There are Hispanics in the US illegally, Russians, Germans, Iraqis, Asians, and on and on… YES the vast majority of the illegals we here in Oklahoma are dealing with HAPPEN to be Hispanic but this bill DOES NOT single out one person AT ALL based on race.

If you are here in violation of US FEDERAL law then you are here illegally and HB1804 applies to you if you’re standing on Oklahoma soil. END OF STORY.

Sen. Coates goes on to discuss the “unfair” economic impact this bill has on the construction industry and how he plans to introduce a bill to repeal the section on punishment of employers. Funny thing about the comments, he doesn’t mention once that he’s a contractor in the construction industry, who in large part BENEFIT from the virtual slave labor of illegal immigration. Could it be that Sen. Coates has an ulterior motive behind his opposition to the enforcement of HB1804?

Yes, I am tired of people demanding the right to break the law and pilfer the treasury of the US TAXPAYER and telling us that it is racist if we complain!!

What I find odd is that simply by virtue of the fact that MOST illegals in the US are Hispanic, that we’re trying to “un-mexican” the US.

Uhhhhh, HELLO, there are ALL SORTS of people here illegally, they’re not JUST Hispanic.

…and so what if it has a slumping effect on our economy, what the hell do you think happened when we killed off slavery here?

If he were a lawyer or a baker, you would say “what does he know about the contruction industry?” but because he is in that industry you say “He’s only looking out for the wallets of his friends and himself.” You are using an ‘ad hominem fallacy’ that ignores the point of his argument.

Besides, there is much more to his comments than one remark about racism.

1. Deportation is a federal issue and a federal law that our state police should not be expected to enforce. We do not have the facilities to house those illegal immigrants that we detain, nor do we have the means to transport them. Sure, we could allocate state funds for this but that would mean we would be adding even more presser on overworked, small precints to do a job that the federal government should handle.

2. Immigration is a federal issue. Would you like a national guard troop traveling from traning to pull you over for speeding? Or a game warden to ticket you for parking illegally? Or ridiculous would it be to send a fire marshall to enforce an arrest warrant for a rapist? We have different offices in our country with different duties and enforcing illegal immigration for the most part is beyond our local precints ability.

3. We have somehwere between 20 to 25 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. We let this problem exist and go unchecked, and WE HAVE benefited from their presence in the U.S.
a. Your electric, cable, and water bills are lower because hard working illegals (mostly hispanic) make up a very significant portion of that workforce, especially the grunt, unskilled labor positions.
b. Your house costs less and your slary is a bit higher because the construction indusry, both in its supply chain and in the on site work is haveily powered by illegal immigrants.
c. Your meat is cheaper because illegal immigrants who are willing to work at a lower wage are a significant portion of the meat-packagin industry’s labor pool.

4. We have had this problem or decades now. And we have benefited from it. Now, you may say the benefit is offset by illegals occupying jobs that americans could have. Sure, we could hire americans who don’t want to work overtime, who want three times the minimum wage for an unsklled hard labor position, who love to unionize to foce such wages, and who frankly don’t seem to want such “crude” labor jobs to do it, but we haven’t. and we have all benefited from this labor.

5. Not only do most americans not want these jobs, but they already have jobs. OKLAHOMA is at 4% to 5% unemployment right now. WE AREN”T OUT OF WORK. take away the illegals abruptly, which is the effect of this law, and we lose some of our economic drive and punish businesses unfairly. You see, we often recieved the nefits of these businesses through lower costs, but now we want them to take the blow for our addiction to low cost goods and services.

6. This law would incriminate anyone who transports or helps an illegal, even for charitable reasons. while unlikely, a church could be held liable for a soup kitchen that illegals eat at. While this, according to Terrill is not the intent of the law, IT WAS WRITTEN POORLY. If its not the intent, then fix it. terrill thinks this law is akin to the Great american novel for it brilliant rhetoric, but its broken and needs qualification.

7. The vast majority of illegals DO PAY TAXES and recieve LITTLE TO NO DIRECT BENEFIT FROM SAID TAXES. You see, they give fake SS#’s. The Social Security service takes around a year to send a little card saying “This number is invalid” and then the illegal worker is often let go and readily finds another blue collar job and repeats the process.
During that first year, the employers almost always withhold taxes, but where does this money go? It goes to government coffers where the money is then utilized like any other social security money, except that these illegals will never have access to these funds (then again, neither will most legal citizens under 35 years of age, but thats another rant).

8. Is it racist? Racism comes in many forms. This law is not Racist in the same way that Jim Crow laws were, but the fact that its authors and many supporters don’t seem to care about the human cost, or even factor it, is disturbing.

I’m asking a simple question… DOES his involvment in an industry that favors illegal labor taint his veiws of this law. It’s a VIABLE question and not a personal attack. If he can prove he doesn’t have an ulterior motive behind his opposition it would only make his point stronger.

1 & 2) When the federal government fails in it’s duty to serve and protect its citizens it falls on the shoulders of the state to stand up and take responsibility. If the state then falls derelict in its duties to serve and protect its citizens that right and responsibility falls upon OUR shoulders. It’s all in this handy little document called the Constitution. You should read it sometime. The federal government has chosen for DECADES to ignore the issue of people entering our sovereign nation against our national laws. If the federal government will not act, then I ask you… WHO WILL.

You argument that an officer of an unrelated agency has no jurisdiction is misplaced and wrong. We’re asking for ENFORCEMENT of the LAW… last time I checked, that is the duty of the police. If the feds turn their back it’s left for the state to pick up the guns. It may be beyond our CURRENT abilities but I’m assuming you’re intelligent enough to know that you have to adapt to changes. We changed a LOT on the federal level facing the aftermath of 9/11… would it not make sense to adapt to THIS as well?

3 & 4) Yes we have benefitted from their existence and it’s quite sick really. We have allowed and created a virtual slave class in this country and because of it, we’ve grown accustomed to the rewards. Doesn’t make it right.

Just because they’re hard working doesn’t override their ILLEGAL behavior. Look at it this way, our borders are like the doors to our house. Would you allow anyone and everyone into your home regardless of the consequences?

Yet again you’re arguing in FAVOR of a slave class of workers. Can you not SEE that we’re exploiting people for our personal gain… and since their “willing” to do it, it’s somehow FINE? Yes we would suffer at first from a lack of willing slaves but again, did the US prosper overnight from the abolition of our slave class? NO… Just because it would require HARD WORK and RESPONSIBILITY from American citizens does NOT make it a bad idea… besides, I’ve never asked for a round up and mass deportation of the 20 million illegal aliens residing in this country. It’s called a GUEST WORKER PROGRAM and it works.

You close off the borders, make DAMN sure no one can cross without your knowledge and make sure the homeland is secure… THEN you talk to those who are here and those who WANT to be here about how to get a job. You cannot just LET it continue the way it is and expect things to just GET better, it won’t.

5) Punish businesses unfairly? Excuse the hell out of me? Damn us to hell for PUNISHING someone who willingly hires ILLEGAL workers… GASP! It is AGAINST THE LAW in the US to stand on US soil without “permission” from the local, state, federal authorities in the form of a visa or other form of official paperwork. Due to the fact that these people lack this paperwork, that would make it ILLEGAL for them to be here and ILLEGAL for anyone to hire them.

If you run a business and hire someone you know is evading arrest for his actions and willingly aid them in their goals… you can and WILL be arrested for assisting that person. Why should it be any different for assisting anyone who is BREAKING ANY LAW?

6) The law does not state that you’re going to lockup for driving an illegal to church or giving them something to eat. It states that you cannot use tax money to do it. Where I find it extremely repulsive is when the leaders of a church stand up and DARE the law to touch them just to make a political point.

7) So you favor a virtual slave class because they pay taxes with STOLEN identities and “help out” a busted system? Man, you had me there for a moment.

8 ) Racism - Discrimination based on the belief that a race is, by nature superior. Humanitarianism doesn’t play into ANYTHING having to do with racism. If you break the law you pay the price… so what if it tears your family apart, if you’re too stupid to realize violating the law is ILLEGAL then you’re asking for what you get. Based on that logic should we stop locking up ALL law breakers who have families because it would just tear up that poor family!

COLT
I am in the construction industry. It is not good to have the slave labor. You talk about the benefits of the cheap illegal labor. Check your insurance polices. The illegals are using the Emergency rooms of our hospitals as a Socialized healthcare type of health system. They have learned that they cannot be turned away. We all pay for that. They drive illegally on our streets and have accidents and kill American drivers. This is a price we pay as well.
As for the Churches that harbor and defend these illegals. A Church can do what a Church is intended to do without defending their right to break the laws. They can minister to their souls and yes even feed and care for them. But not to the point of continously harboring and defending these people when they stand and openly claim that they will not obey the laws of this country. These churches have become political factions and should lose their tax free status. Threaten that and see how devout they are in this issue. I honestly have no issue with a “legal” anyone in this country.
The fact that there are so many should offer no sanctuary. There laws in this country. They are in place for the safety of the people. You mention that employers must withhold for the first year. In the construction industry, most are contract labor. Not subject to that. You mentioned electric and cable bills are lower because of these illegals. Those two trades are skilled labor trades, not grunt work as you refered to it. Most Citys are responsable for the waterbills and if they are hiring illegals then shame on them. They should set the example for our nation by upholding the laws not breaking it. Get your facts right.

Just a small note on the “electrical” issue. I watched these crews work on my power lines for a solid week while I was without power.

How many illegals did they have hauled up a pole? ZERO.

Every single lineman in my subdivision was a licensed, skilled AMERICAN citizen.
