Ahhhh what a pain that free speech thing is eh?
There was a fairly decent debate running on the topic of President Bush being booed at a Washington Nationals game. Those supporting the booing were on the side of “anything goes” based on the first amendment. Those of us opposed to it generally agreed that there is a line in the sand between dissent and disagreement and just being a flat out jackass.
Enter Randi Rhodes, hot head (possibly former) radio talk show host on the somehow propped up on crutches radio network Air America.
In a recent appearance before a relatively small audience, Rhodes made the following comment about Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro [warning, strong language]:
“What a whore Geraldine Ferraro is! She’s such a fucking whore! …Hillary is a big fucking whore, too”. You know why she’s a big fucking whore? Because her deal is always, ‘Read the fine print, asshole!’”
Now I’m no fan of either of those targets and it’s understandable that it was supposed to be a comedy bit… BUT, add in the fact that Rhodes has been hot on Hillary’s heels like this on her show for a while (minus the cursing, obviously) I find it hard to buy that she was being “comically rough” on the two.
Following her little “comic” tirade, Air America Radio has suspended Randi’s job indefinitely pending the gaging of public opinion on the matter.
“Air America encourages strong opinions about public affairs but does not condone such abusive, ad hominem language by our Hosts.”
I’m actually glad there are strong consequences for her actions, mainly because it’s nice to see inappropriate comments from the other side of the aisle actually DO have consequences (although no where NEAR as harsh as if she had been on say… the EIB network).
Regardless of what people seem to think of the 1st Amendment to the Bill of Rights, it’s not a ‘get out of jail free’ card that lets you do or say anything and everything you please. Actions and statements have consequences and like I’ve said about a BILLION times, just because you CAN, doesn’t mean you SHOULD.
Just more proof that class and taste are gone in this country… calling someone a whore isn’t comedy, it’s stupid.
