Suspended for sitting out the pledge.
Three Eighth-Graders were suspended last week for not standing during the morning Pledge of Allegiance in a small school in Minnesota. The students simply did not feel the need to pledge their allegiance and simply chose to sit it out.
Mel Olson, the district’s community education director issued the following statement referring to the district policy which requires one stand during the pledge and if he stood by that policy:
“These three students didn’t, and they got caught… being a veteran and a United States of America citizen, absolutely.”
Mr. Olson… can you please point to me where it is required that all citizens pledge allegiance to their country? Also of note is that the STATE which helps keep your school running, has a law on the books allowing for students and teachers to opt out should the so choose. Seems to me like you don’t have much of a leg to stand on there Mr. Olson.
The principal of the school has decided that “rewording” the rule in the school policy would be a “good idea”… understatement of the year.
Compulsory Allegiance to your country is not something I will EVER support. Our nation was founded by dissent and protest and the belief that man has a right to his opinions. Let the kids sit out… who are they hurting? Your fragile ego?
