Obama on executive experience
It is no secret that Obama feels his simply running for President has gifted him with the experience needed to run this country… but if you needed any more proof that he is full of himself, his recent interview with Anderson Cooper did a pretty good job of proving it.
When asked about his striking lack of executive experience, Barack responded with:
Well, you know, my understanding is, is that Governor Palin’s town of Wasilly [sic] has, I think, 50 employees. We have got 2,500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe $12 million a year. You know, we have a budget of about three times that just for the month.
So, I think that our ability to manage large systems and to execute, I think, has been made clear over the last couple of years. And, certainly, in terms of the legislation that I passed just dealing with this issue post-Katrina of how we handle emergency management, the fact that many of my recommendations were adopted and are being put in place as we speak, I think, indicates the degree to which we can provide the kinds of support and good service that the American people expect.
All points aside, two things LEAP out at me from this comment right away. First, Obama intentionally mispronounced Wasilla, referring to it as Wasilly (it’s a small town, and small towns are hilarious to Democrats). His second glaring omission was that Sarah Palin hasn’t just stepped out of being a Mayor and headed towards VP… she is acting Governor of the entire state of Alaska (with an 80%+ approval rating).
As for Obama’s “record” on post Katrina leadership… no less than fourteen speeches and press conferences voicing his concerns on the issue, as well as a few commencement speeches. Co-Sponsoring three or four bills in Congress and introducing 3 bills of his own.
Sounds like the job description of a Senator to me… hardly “executive” experience.
As for Governor Palin’s employees and budget?
Obama listed his campaign employment numbers at roughly 2,500… The state of Alaska under Governor Palin employs over 25,000. Ten times that of Obama’s campaign.
Obama listed HIS budget at $36 million a month… Governor Palin manages the state of Alaska with an annual budget of $9 Billion. For Obama that is $750 Million a month.
Obama is running for Office, he isn’t running his budget OR his campaign.
Penny Pritzker is Obama’s Campaign Finance manager, NOT Obama… nice pick BTW.
David Plouffe is Obama’s Campaign Manager, NOT Obama…
If Obama’s experience is in managing his campaign and campaign finances, I now announce the 2008 Democratic Ticket… Plouffe/Pritzker!
Give me a break!

A friend of mine just emailed me one of your articles from a while back. I read that one a few more. Really enjoy your blog. Thanks

Thought I’d visit after our couple 140-char exchanges on Twitter!
So let me ask you this – how is Obama’s campaign supposed to be recoined as Plouffe/Pritzker when, in your book, Palin takes 100% of the credit of executive experience over her state cabinet appointees and staff’s work? Also, do you think it’s selective to strictly qualify Palin’s vs. Obama’s “executive” experience yet totally ignore that the Senate is part of the legislative branch of the United States while Palin’s “executive” experience is over 1 of the least humanly-populated states of a total 50 (where her approval rating is debatable/negligible)?

Same way President Bush gets the blame for anything that happens…
Obama is running for an executive position, Palin already has an executive position and has had one for nearly a decade.
Merely running for office, having been a community organizer and having had roughly 140+ days on the job does not qualify as “executive experience”. Obama himself implied that he runs his campaign and as such has executive experience.
Legislative… legislative… a job in the Senate is “legislative experience”. President Bush is in the Executive Branch giving him “executive experience”. Had Obama been CEO of a company, or Mayor of Chicago, or Governor of Illinois he too would have worked within executive capacity. He has not, therefor he lacks “executive experience”.
Population has nothing to do with your experience level… maybe capacity… but you cannot say someone has no experience simply because the state they presided over was smaller in population than you would like.

Would you say that the people discontent with the war and who say that we should have never waged it would be correct in painting Bush responsible for us being in that war?
Okay, so if we are narrowly qualifying executive experience as only holding such a position while in elected office – can’t we then question the validity of Palin’s executive experience as an actual advantage over Obama when she has never used that executive position to make foreign policy decisions? Can you honestly equate any sort of executive experience to the level that Dick Cheney has been at the helm of for the past 8 years? I thought this was an appropriate example of how not McCain’s rep could not even name one decision Palin has made on foreign policy.
So okay, even if I give you the “population” argument and executive actually meaning “executive,” would you seriously say that all executive powers are equal?

When did I say she has foreign policy experience…
Alaska may be the closest state to Russia but being Governor of Florida doesn’t make you an expert on foreign policy either.
Executive experience, governing a city a state or even running a multi-national corporation involves more than one aspect.
I would not say that all executive powers are equal… but the FACT remains if you have NO executive experience, it doesn’t compare at all to a decade of even the most “backwoods ye-haw hillbilly eskimo” experience.
May I also add that I don’t think ANYONE who has never held the position of VP or President really has a real firm idea of what they’re in for until they get there… but I personally would rather bet my chips on SOME rather than NONE.

I think a small town feeding itself on earmark money since the Palin days ($28 million+ from the federal government) is indeed hilarious. My hometown of 48,000 struggles to scrape together even $1 million for road repairs from the federal government every year.
And it’s interesting how the focus is now on Palin (running for VP) v. Obama (running for President). If we were to compare Obama and McCain, who are both running for President, neither has executive experience. Unless there’s some anticipation that God forbid, McCain dies during the presidency and then the torch is passed to Palin. I don’t see anybody comparing McCain (running for President) with Biden (running for VP) on this issue. Personally, it’s totally irrelevant to me, because it’s no comparison when Palin and Obama aren’t even running for the same positions.
