Obama the vain
With President Obama’s recent trip to Copenhagen to attempt to rally support and ultimately win the 2016 Olympic for Chicago a lot of people were taking some unnecessary pot shots at him.
I honestly didn’t take issue with the trip itself… it was with how he and his wife sold the pitch that bothered me.
The Olympics is a multinational thing… it is supposed to bring different cultures together, to put aside their differences for a period of time and compete for their countries.
Notice I said COUNTRIES, not their LEADERS.
In both of their bids to solidify support and votes for the 2016 Olympics in Chicago, Michele Obama and President Barack Obama took a “me first” approach. Rather than selling the USA and Chicago to the IOC they sold themselves. George Will did the research and dug through both of their speeches and uncovered their me firsts…
The President and First Lady went to Copenhagen and gave little speeches about themselves. She, Mrs. Obama, used the first-person singular pronoun in some form or another, “I” or “me”… 34 times in sixteen paragraphs. He used it 23 times in thirteen paragraphs.
He went on to add that adjectives find a way of attaching themselves to a leader over the course of their career and that Obama is not careful, he will find his mark on the history books labeled as vain. A point with which I have no trouble agreeing with.
According to Dan Gainor of The Business & Media Institute, in Obama’s 41 speeches to date (seems to me like he’s done more than 41) Obama has spoken about himself 1,198 times (1,121 ‘I’s and 77 ‘me’s)
Call me crazy but I always thought that it was about US as a whole…
