I don’t usually beg my readers to sign up for anything but to those of you who have musical skills in the Bugle/Trumpet arena, I would LOVE to hear you’ve signed up already.

Bugles Across America is an organization who is trying to gain as many volunteers as they can to serve the men and women in the armed services who have fallen by honoring their memory through a LIVE performance of Taps.

BAA was founded in 2000 when Congress passed legislation stating Veterans had a right to at least 2 uniformed military people to fold the flag and play taps on a CD player. Feeling that it was a slap in their face to simply play Taps on a recording as if we were too busy to honor them.

As a Trumpet player myself, as well as a Vigil Honor Eagle Scout, I felt that such a call was well served and I would be honored to play a mere 24 notes for their life of service.

So if you too play the Trumpet or a valved/non-valved Bugle I would love it if you would sign up.

You can read more about the NFP Organization by visiting their website.

I’m not one to air my dirty laundry in public… but it’s only fair that I tell MY side of Libertarian Jason’s reality.

Jason was recently removed from commenting at this blog NOT because of his wondrous wisdom and infallible logic as he would have you believe in his post about this blog on his… (google “Yearning To Breathe Free” it’s a Blogger blog.) but for his wild assumption and unwillingness to retract his veiled accusations that I am a racist based on my stance on illegal immigration.

There are 2 things that will get anyone removed from the discussion, constant hurling of insults (insinuated or blatant) and dropping the f’bomb.

If you take it from Jason’s side, I simply couldn’t fight the fight against his ironclad logic and since he was poking holes in my argument, I had to take him down so I looked good…

The title of his reality was “When You Can’t Respond to Reason and Logic…simply pretend the argument doesn’t exist.”

I just want to let everyone here know that in the 3 years I have been blogging here, 2 people have been removed from commenting, one for insane amounts of f’bombs and other cursing and now one more for a flat out baseless accusation and personal insult.

Anyone is welcome here, and everyone is welcome to disagree with me (in fact it’s preferred as non-stop agreement is boring)… but act like an adult. If you feel my stance is wrong, tell me but I expect people to be able to state their positions in a mature manner.

Again, sorry for the mini-rant but I felt it best to just let it be known since others involved couldn’t drop it either.

Back to the blog now…

The team over at 9Rules, where I am a member, have started up a new mini site called Quofda where they pose questions for us to answer how we see fit on our personal blogs.

I kinda blew it off cause it looked too much like one of those things you would do on a blog that you just talked about personal things, but Scrivs decided to pose a challege to me and a couple of the other hold outs to write a response using the topic of our blogs. I accepted and promised an entry by the end of the day so here’s mine…

The question posed today is “What was your favorite age of living?”

Now even though the phrasing of the question is poorly written I’d have to say, politically my favorite AGE for me would have to have been 22. I had just taken a GREAT political science course and finally found the subject intriguing enough to dive in. There was a hell of a lot going around with politics that year as 9/11 was really only 3 months prior to that birthday and I just remember things being so loud politically.

2001 was one of the most overwhelming years of my life.

Posted by Casey:

I’ve just come to this conclusion, and I need to put my thoughts down in a public forum.

I think I’m closer to a Libertarian-Republican. But I’m not a Libertarian in the traditional sense.

Unlike the party platform for the Libertarian Party, I don’t believe in legalizing all drugs, I don’t believe in an open border or free trade with ALL nations, I don’t believe that all abortions should be legal, and I don’t believe in military isolationism.

More below the fold…

- I believe in abolishing the IRS, repealing the 16th Amendment, and implementing The FairTax.

- I believe in closing the border with a double-layered fence with vehicle barriers, doing all we can to stop illegal immigration, punishing those businesses that hire illegal immigrants, thereby forcing them to see hiring illegals as too risky, and compelling illegals to go back from whence they came without having waste money deporting them. Then and only then, I support implementing a guest worker program for those that wish to work here.

- I believe that we should take the fight to the terrorists

- I believe in free trade with nations that have democratically elected governments and free markets. And I believe in complete trade embargoes with those nations that do not meet those requirements.

- I believe that drug users should be put in treatment programs, not jail.

- I believe that marijuana use should be legalized but regulated along the lines of alcohol.

- I believe that everyone has a right to practice their religion without interference from any government entity. If a group of students wants to pray before a competition or before a meal or a Muslim student wants to practice his duty to pray five times a day, they should not be restricted from doing so. As long as a school is not mandating compelled prayer, the so-called “separation of church and state” is not violated.

- I believe that abortion is abhorrent and barbaric. I believe that life starts with conception. The fetus starts to form the instant the sperm enters the egg, has a heartbeat within 6 weeks, and develops other organs and senses soon thereafter. Partial-birth abortions should remain banned FOREVER. If you don’t know what that is, it is the partial delivery of a late-term pregnancy, and then they suck the brains out of the baby. There is never any reason for an abortion if the fetus is viable outside the womb. If the woman’s life is in danger from the pregnancy, a fetus that is viable outside the womb must be delivered or removed via C-section and be allowed to continue to develop as an premature baby would. I support a ban on all abortions after the first trimester. However, I cannot support an outright ban on abortions for the simple fact that people will continue to seek them out and we will end up with back-alley abortions like we had in the 60’s. We can’t have rogue abortions where people are dying and bleeding out, etc. But we can limit the time in which an abortion can be performed.

- I do believe in supporting all stem cell research. The test tube babies are going to be destroyed. Why not put them to good use before doing so?

- I believe that the next great endeavor of human-kind is the journey into space. I support grants for private enterprise to develop space vehicles and private space exploration. I support the continuation of government space science exploration missions. I support going beyond Earth orbit. I even support a mission where a group of strictly VOLUNTEERS would choose to live out their lives in space and explore the solar system.

These are just a few of my beliefs. I’m going to be starting my own political blog soon…I’ve just got so much in my head that I want to get written down!

Edit: Two more

- I believe that people have a Constitutional right to own firearms for self-defense and lawful gaming (I wouldn’t hunt/shoot an animal myself, but I will eat them all day long!), but I believe it is still too easy to obtain firearms. There needs to be a 90 day waiting period, a criminal and mental background check, and all firearms should be registered in a national firearms database. And there is no reason for ANYONE to own assault weapons. The assault weapons ban needs to be renewed.

- I believe that the Federal government has no place in education, except for ensuring everyone’s access to it. There needs to be either vouchers or property tax credits for those that decide to home school or send their kids to private schools. There needs to be tougher curricula, not easier. There needs to be more of an emphasis on history, civics, economics, and science, and less on art, foreign languages, and standardized tests.

I haven’t fully formulated my thoughts on education reform yet. That’s the one I’m having the most trouble with.

`Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
In a one-bedroom house made of plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney, with presents to give
and to see just who in this home did live.

As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand.
On the wall hung pictures of a far distant land.

With medals and badges, awards of all kind,
a sobering thought soon came to my mind.
For this house was different, unlike any I’d seen.
This was the home of a U.S. Marine.

I’d heard stories about them, I had to see more,
so I walked down the hall and pushed open the door.
And there he lay sleeping, silent, alone,
Curled up on the floor in his one-bedroom home.

He seemed so gentle, his face so serene,
Not how I pictured a U.S. Marine.
Was this the hero, of whom I’d just read?
Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?

His head was clean-shaven, his weathered face tan.
I soon understood, this was more than a man.
For I realized the families that I saw that night,
owed their lives to these men, who were willing to fight.

Soon around the Nation, the children would play,
And grown-ups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom, each month and all year,
because of Marines like this one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home.
Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye.
I dropped to my knees and I started to cry.

He must have awoken, for I heard a rough voice,
“Santa, don’t cry, this life is my choice
I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more.
My life is my God, my country, my Corps.”

With that he rolled over, drifted off into sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.

I watched him for hours, so silent and still.
I noticed he shivered from the cold night’s chill.
So I took off my jacket, the one made of red,
and covered this Marine from his toes to his head.
Then I put on his T-shirt of scarlet and gold,
with an eagle, globe and anchor emblazoned so bold.
And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride,
and for one shining moment, I was Marine Corps deep inside.

I didn’t want to leave him so quiet in the night,
this guardian of honor so willing to fight.
But half asleep he rolled over, and in a voice clean and pure,
said “Carry on, Santa, it’s Christmas Day, all secure.”
One look at my watch and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, Semper Fi and goodnight.

Just a quick note to all of you REALLY stupid ebay bidders who are new to the idea of an auction.

The point of an auction is not to buy an item for retail value, as one can just go to the store and buy something for that price.

The idea behind an auction is to pay as LITTLE as possible while still meeting the value the seller has put on the item.

Case in point, a MacBook Pro retails for around $2400. If someone has one they would like to sell for $1000 LET THEM! Don’t bid aimlessly every 5 seconds until the ebay bid reaches $2500… if you do that, you deserve a swift kick to the head.

If you turned on the TV last night, you know that Michael Richards (Kramer from Seinfeld) exploded in a night club in a fit of racial slurs and derogatory language. There was no excuse for his behavior and he deserves any and all the bad press he has coming his way. As a professional, you should be able to handle an audience and it was apparent the other night that Richards was lacking that skill.

That being said, many of the reactions to this are TOTALLY off base.

Fellow Comedian Paul Rodriguez was in the night club during the overreaction and had this to say.

“Once the word comes out of your mouth and you don’t happen to be African-American, then you have a whole lot of explaining. Freedom of speech has its limitations and I think Michael Richards found those limitations.”

Bull, Paul… and you KNOW IT. Comedians that happen to be of a “minority” can stand on a stage and go on a 40 minute racial tirade about those ’stupid cracker, honkey, milktoast white folk’… and not reaction is to be had over something like that. Yet let some honkey cracker stand up and say the N-word JUST ONCE. Oh HELL no… his career is OVER!

If I stand up in a crowd and express pride in my heritage, I’m bound to be called a goose stepping Nazi… why? Because it’s “not cool” to have pride if you’re a white boy with German heritage. On that same token, a black man steps up in a crowd and expresses pride in his heritage he might as well be hoisted up on a pedestal and praised for the love he has for “his people”.

Chris Rock lets it be known in almost any routine he does that “black people hate whites”. OH! I see, so because our country is somehow the ONLY country to ever have slave labor we somehow give a pass to anyone that could POSSIBLY be descendant of a slave to spew forth any racial slur they can conjure up… after all, someone in their family MAY have been a slave.

Sorry, I don’t buy into the reparations for non-victims party. If you were born 20 years ago, you have no CLUE what “oppression” is. You’re an American citizen, afforded the same rights and privileges as ANY other American is… I owe you nothing. You don’t get special dispensation for anything simply because you have a better tan than I do. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. If you’re going to stand up on a stage in front of a dozen or even a couple hundred thousand people and hurl racial remarks, you better damned well be ready when they come flying back… and that goes for ANYONE.

Michael Richards made a bad move the other night and he knows it… but the reaction from the media and the press is what I would call an OVERreaction.

This morning I went about my daily wander through TechCrunch.com and noticed a pay site called ReviewMe. The concept is that you sign up, list your blog and they use things like your Alexa, Technorati ranks and your incoming hits to establish a “price” for your blog entries (mine is set at $30 currently).

Once your site is listed, any advertisers who are registered with the service can send you offers for your blog. The selling point to me is that you don’t HAVE to post if you don’t want to, and it seems as if you get offers based on the content of your blog… (so you don’t see me posting about Levitra or some other crap for $30)

The website itself is very straightforward and quite easy to use and currently they’ve got $25,000 set aside to pay bloggers for a short 200 word review so YES I’m getting paid to write this, but hey… I’m willing to sell out to pay my bloggin’ bills!

If you have a topical blog and would like to earn a bit here and there go sign up and give it a spin… if you don’t like the service you can simply ignore it and never be worse the wear. I give it a month and I’ll see how I do. If it pays off and it doesn’t make my blog look like a political advertisement then hey… what’s a little cash for my time!

Disclosure: This post is being paid for.

On September 11, 2006, 2,996 volunteer bloggers
will join together for a tribute to the victims of 9/11.
Each person will pay tribute to a single victim.

We will honor them by remembering their lives,
and not by remembering their murderers.” – D. Challener Roe

On the week of September 11th, and the days leading up to it, our media will put out a massive campaign to “remember September 11th” yet they will fail to do the most important thing. They have, and will continue to remember those who carried out the horrendous attack on our nation on 9/11/2001… not those who died.

Those who died on 9/11 were not military combatants, they were citizens of the United States of America.

As my contribution to the 2,996 Project I will do my best to introduce you to Azucena de la Torre (50), who was murdered on 9/11/2006 in the World Trade Center.

Three weeks prior to 9/11, Azucena awoke from a dream that her relatives believe foretold her death on that fateful day. In her dream, her father, Carlos, and sister, Aurora had paid her a visit. Azucena had told her sister that they had told her that her turn was coming, and that they would be waiting for her… her father died in 1985 and her sister died in 1996.

Azucena was an immigrant from Ecuador in 1969, shortly after graduating from High School. Miss de la Torre had a gift in mathematics that led her down a successful path in her new home, America. She learned English while working for an architectual firm in Manhattan. During her employment there, she studied math, physics and computer science at City College, Manhattan, eventually earning her Bachelors in Math and a Minor in Physics. She then went on to earn a Masters Degree in Computer Science at New York University.

Azucena never had children of her own, yet she was seen as the family caregiver, often watching over six nieces, Sonia, Jessica, Viviana, Diana, Monica and Candice, and two nephews, Daniel and Gabriel. Even taking in Candice and Monica when their mother Aurora died in 1996.

She was very successful in her work life as well as her personal life, eventually becoming a vice president at Chase Manhattan Bank where she was employed for over ten years. Eventually she moved on to Cantor Fitzgerald where she had worked for a little over 4 years until 9/11.

Her neice Diana remembers her in these words. “The loss for us is tremendous, as she was the center of our family. We will never forget Saturday barbecues by the pool, or her quick hand to help, the precision of her math skills, or the house where we have all grown up. The seeds of her soul will nourish our underlying strength, determination and will. Unity and love are the strongest part of our family. Dead or alive, we will always be there for each other.”
